Sunday School Remix - Week 3
Like a remix of a familiar song, the story of Jonah sounds different when we listen with grown-up ears. As kids, we likely just saw a runaway prophet and a big fish. But as adults, we start to feel the tension: Why would Jonah run from God’s call? Why would he rather die than obey? Why does he get angry when people repent?
The answer sits in the brutal history of Nineveh. These were terrible people. As the capital of Assyria, Nineveh was known for extreme violence, public torture, and crushing Israel with cruelty and power. Jonah wasn’t afraid of failure—he was afraid God would actually forgive them. He wanted justice. He hated the idea of mercy. And so he ran. But God, slow to anger, rich in love, wasn’t just trying to reach Nineveh. He was trying to reach Jonah.
Jonah’s story is both ridiculous and miraculous. It exposes how we can be deeply religious yet far from God’s heart. We can be morally right and still miss the point entirely. God doesn’t just want to use us. He wants to change us. And often, that change happens in the tension—when what God is doing feels uncomfortable, unfair, or upside-down. That’s where transformation begins.
So, where are you today? Maybe you’re resisting God’s call because it doesn’t feel right. Maybe you’re angry that grace is being given to people you don’t think deserve it. Or maybe you’re in the belly of something hard, crying out for God to show up. Wherever you are, don’t run from the tension—meet Jesus in it. He’s already there. And often it’s in that awkward middle place that He invites us into something deeper, something better: transformation.
