Mother's Day - 2025

We all struggle with the desire for control, especially when life feels uncertain. In our efforts to manage behavior, fix problems, or protect the people we love, we often try to control those around us, convincing ourselves that it’s wise, loving, or even godly.

This impulse is not new. We’ve been reaching for control since the very beginning. In Genesis 3, the serpent tempts Adam and Eve by framing God’s boundary as a limitation to their freedom and leading them to believe that more control would bring greater security. That moment changed the blueprint of humanity. Ever since, our natural reflex in the face of fear or chaos has been to grasp for control through knowledge, resources, or action, instead of turning to God.

But control always comes at a cost. When we try to lead others through control—whether out of love, fear, or a desire to protect—it creates anxiety, damages relationships, and produces distrust. Control and healthy relationships cannot coexist.

We were created for the wholeness and freedom of Genesis 1–2. That longing for restoration is good, but we can’t bring it about on our own terms. Only Jesus can restore what’s broken. The path forward isn’t more control—it’s deeper trust and surrender to the God who holds it all. Peace doesn’t come from fixing everything around us; it comes from surrendering to God and letting him lead.
