Called - The Women Jesus Knew - Part 2
In Luke 10:38–42, we read about two sisters, Mary and Martha, who each responded to Jesus’ visit to their home in a different way. Martha, doing what was culturally expected of her, worked tirelessly to serve and honor her guest. Her intentions were pure. She loved Jesus and wanted to care for Him well. But her actions were shaped by what the world told her mattered most. We can all relate to her frustration when her serving felt unseen or when others didn’t share her urgency. Yet Jesus gently redirected her. Not to criticize her effort, but to center her heart. He looked past her striving and invited her into something deeper: to pause her doing and simply be with Him.
Mary’s choice to sit at Jesus’ feet wasn’t laziness; it was discipleship. In a culture that didn’t make space for women to learn directly from a teacher, Jesus welcomed her in and celebrated her hunger to know Him. He showed both sisters (and us) that the highest honor they could give Him was their attention.
This story isn’t about being a “Mary” or a “Martha.” It’s about recognizing that no one else can sit at Jesus’ feet for us. Every day, He extends the same invitation—to come, slow down, and sit at His feet. In a world that measures worth by how much we do, Jesus reminds us that true life begins with being with Him.
