Finding Freedom From Fear

Fear and anxiety have a way of gripping us. They cling tightly, are hard to shake, and quietly influence how we live and see the world.  In Matthew 14, Peter’s story shows just how quickly fear can take hold. One moment he’s doing the extraordinary—walking on water toward Jesus—and the next he notices the wind and waves, panic sets in, and he begins to sink. That sudden shift feels familiar. Fear doesn’t mean Peter failed, and it doesn’t mean we have either. There is no shame in admitting we’re afraid; it doesn’t make us weak or fake—it makes us honest. What matters most is not that fear shows up, but what we do when it does.

Peter’s response was simple and desperate: “Jesus, save me.” Freedom from fear doesn’t come from ignoring it, fighting it with willpower, or accepting it as a permanent reality. It comes from turning toward Jesus in the very moment fear feels loud and overwhelming. The storm may not stop right away, and certainty may still feel out of reach, but hope enters the story the moment we look to Him. Each time we choose to turn our attention toward Jesus, fear loosens its grip and trust begins to grow. Hope reminds us that fear may visit, but it does not get to rule—because Jesus is already near and already at work.
