4Word Prayers - Part 1

Gratitude responds to what God has done; love responds to who God is. We are often grateful for Jesus — His help, His forgiveness, His provision. But that’s not the same as saying, “Jesus, I love You.” Scripture reminds us, “We love because He first loved us.” You can’t manufacture love for Jesus on your own. It forms in you as you let Him love you in your darkest places.

In John 21, Peter, weighed down by guilt and disappointment, leaves his calling behind and returns to his life before Jesus. Shame has him convinced he’s disqualified. But Jesus meets Peter right there on the shore, not with condemnation, but with a fire and a meal. Before Jesus asks for Peter’s love, He reveals His own. He finds him, cares for him, and restores him. This is where love grows, not from cleaned-up moments, but from the messy places when you’ve gone back to the “boat,” when your nets are empty, when you feel like a failure. That’s when He calls you His own. That’s when He prepares breakfast on the shore. That’s where love takes root.

If you long to grow in love for Jesus, begin here: let Him find you where you truly are. Let Him care for you. Let Him forgive and restore what you think is too far gone. As you experience who He is to you personally when you are fully who you are, your heart begins to respond. And in time, you’ll find yourself praying a simple, honest, four-word prayer from a place of deep truth: Jesus, I love You.
